How to descale a kettle

As a country of tea and coffee drinkers, we give our kettles a workout every day. Frequent use can cause a quick build-up of limescale, and if not removed regularly, it can shorten the lifespan of your kettle. So you can continue enjoying your hot drinks in peace, we’ve compiled a handy guide on how to descale a kettle.

Descaling with vinegar

Vinegar is a great solution for breaking down limescale because of its mild acidity. It’s handy to keep in your pantry or kitchen cupboards for regular descaling.

  1. Combine water and white vinegar

Fill the kettle with a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water.

  1. Bring to a boil

Bring the mixture to a boil and leave to stand. You can leave the kettle to stand for a few hours or overnight, depending on the severity of the limescale build-up.

  1. Drain and rinse

Pour away the solution, fill with water, bring to the boil and drain. Do this a few times to fully remove the smell of vinegar.

  1. Do this regularly

Regular cleaning is important when keeping your kettle in tip-top condition. By descaling your kettle once a month, you can keep any severe limescale build up at bay.
