How to use a stovetop espresso maker

The stovetop espresso maker – sometimes referred to as a moka pot – is an easy and affordable way to brew rich, flavourful coffee without the help of a professional coffee machine.

A stovetop coffee maker is lightweight, easy to use, and pours out very strong coffee in a matter of minutes. Although the coffee it produces is not the same as espresso, it is still great quality and can be enjoyed black or with milk. A stovetop espresso maker is fantastic for slow mornings or after dinner, when a tea or coffee is needed.

Using a stovetop espresso maker

  1. Unscrew the espresso maker, removing the top half from the bottom half. Take the filter basket and place to the side and fill the bottom section (sometimes called a chamber) with water, stopping once you reach the bottom of the round safety valve.

  2. Replace the filter basket on top of the bottom half, sitting above the water. Fill the basket with medium-grind coffee, making sure it’s level with the top of the filter. Avoid over packing it.

  3. Gently screw on the top half, making sure not to spill the lower chamber. Make sure the sections are tightly screwed together and sitting straight to avoid leaks.

  1. Place the espresso maker on the stove (it works best on a gas hob, but induction friendly moka pots are available) and put it over a flame no larger than the bottom of the coffee maker.

  1. When the coffee starts to emerge into the top chamber (you should be able to hear bubbling), turn down the flame so the rest of the coffee can percolate through. The coffee is done once the top section is full.

  2. Pour straight into a mug and enjoy your coffee black or with a splash of milk.
