Understanding the ProCook Barista Elite Bean to Cup Espresso Coffee Machine

Before you start using your coffee machine, it’s important to understand how to use the machine and prep it before first use. To help, we’ve got a great video explaining how to use the ProCook Barista Elite Bean to Cup Espresso Coffee Machine as well as an instruction manual.

Core components of the coffee machine

Our ProCook Barista Elite Bean to Cup Espresso Coffee Machine has the following features:

Bean hopper: The bean hopper is the airtight compartment attached to the top of the coffee machine and where you put whole coffee beans. The bean hopper also has a burr coffee grinder where the coffee machine and hopper meet.

Tamper: A small, weighted coffee accessory that’s used to compress ground coffee into a dense disc inside the portafilter.

Portafilter: A handle-like coffee accessory that holds the coffee grounds in a filter basket used to brew espresso.

Group head: The group head is found at the front of an espresso machine and where the portafilter attaches.

Filter basket: A metal basket that securely holds the ground coffee in the portafilter.

Bracket: A place to insert and securely hold the portafilter still while the burr grinder grinds the beans.

Steam wand: A metal nozzle attached to the coffee machine that’s used to make textured milk for your preferred coffee drink.

Water tank: A removable plastic tank found at the back of the coffee machine.

Drip tray: Designed to catch coffee drips when brewing coffee.

Coloured display: Easy-to-use coloured display, so you can easily select and brew your preferred coffee.

Before first use

Once you understand your coffee machine’s components, it’s time to prepare it for first use. We always recommend following these steps if this is a new coffee machine or if you haven’t used it for a while:

  1. Remove all packaging materials and any tape and stickers. Check all parts are there and not damaged.

  2. Remove the water tank from the machine and discard the rubber plug found where the water tank and machine connect. Pour cold tap water into the tank and return to the back of the machine, locking it into position.

  3. Carefully add the empty bean hopper to the top of the conical burr grinder by aligning the fixing tab with the red notch and rotate clockwise to lock. We recommend rotating the bean hopper to medium grind size (15).

  4. Insert the single-cup filter basket to the portafilter and insert the portafilter into the group head at a 45-degree angle, rotating anticlockwise to lock into place.

  5. Make sure that the steam wand lever in the upright position.

  6. Plug in the coffee machine and turn it on by pressing the power button. All the buttons will flash while the machine is in a preheating mode. Once preheating is finished, all buttons will stay on.

  7. Place a large container under the group head and steam wand and do an initial rinse cycle before making your first coffee.

  8. From the ‘Settings’ menu, select ‘Descaling’ and hit ‘Start’ to start the process. Ignore the prompt to add white vinegar or descaler. Prompts will appear on screen - follow the instructions on the display.

  9. Once the rinse cycle is complete, remove and empty the containers under the steam wand and group head.

How to brew the perfect espresso

Once you’ve unpackaged, set up and rinsed through your coffee machine, it’s time to brew your first shot of espresso.

  1. Fill the bean hopper with coffee beans and place the lid. Do not overfill the bean hopper and adjust the grind setting. For a smooth, rich espresso, we recommend the coarseness setting of 3.

  2. From the coloured display screen, select your coffee. Each coffee drink type with have a coffee bean symbol, symbolising the filter basket needed. 1 bean equals the single cup filter while 2 beans equal the double cup filter.

  3. Take the correct filter basket and place in the portafilter. Slot the portafilter into the bracket with the handle facing towards you and hold still while the burr grinder grinds the coffee beans. (NOTE: Each coffee drink has its own set of specifications – you can always amend the grind time by holding the ‘SELECT’ button on each drink and customising the settings. We recommend a grind time of 8 seconds for a single filter drink and 11 seconds for a double filter drink. The instruction manual details all recommended grind time, water temps and more for each drink).

  4. Take the tamper and press down on the coffee grounds, creating a dense “puck”.

  5. Attach the portafilter into the group head, place a mug beneath the group head and follow the instructions on the screen. If you have selected a coffee drink that requires milk, the display will prompt you to fill a milk jug and place underneath the steam wand.

  6. When frothing the milk, the steam wand is moveable. The display will prompt you to pull the lever down, starting the steaming process. Be careful as hot steam can be dangerous if it meets skin. Once the milk starts to become silky, return the lever to its upright position and pour the milk into the coffee – try your hand at latte art if you wish!

  7. The machine will prompt you to clean the steam wand manually after each use – simply wipe it down with a cloth once the lever is in an upright position. Enjoy your coffee!
