What is a flat white?

The flat white is an espresso-based drink known for its velvety, smooth texture. Although similar to a latte, the flat white has a higher coffee-to-milk ratio and less microfoam on top.

Like all coffee-based drinks, perfecting the espresso-to-milk ratio and foamy top requires an espresso coffee machine and some practice. However, once you get the hang of it, you can enjoy a barista quality flat white in the comfort of your own home.

To help you brew the most delicious flat white, we’ve created this guide explaining what exactly makes this coffee drink special.

Espresso

A flat white can be made with a single or double shot of espresso. Like most coffee drinks, this espresso creates the coffee base. Using a bean-to-cup coffee machine means you can create your single or double shot of espresso with ease.

Microfoam (steamed milk)

What makes the flat white special is the microfoam, which is steamed milk with a finely textured, smooth texture. You can use a steam wand on a coffee machine or dedicated milk frother to create a glossy, velvety texture.

Espresso-to-milk ratio

There’s more espresso in a flat white compared to a latte. By doing this, you can enjoy a stronger coffee flavour and a less milky drink. This espresso-to-milk ratio is because a flat white is usually served in smaller sized cups.

The right serving size

Flat whites are typically served in smaller sized cups, usually around 5-6 ounces. Some cafes will refuse to serve smaller or larger sizes because of this exact espresso-to-milk ratio is paramount to the drink’s integrity.

Flat white vs latte

Although the flat white and latte are both espresso-based drinks with steamed milk, they differ in espresso-to-milk ratio and texture. Because of its smaller size, the flat white has a stronger coffee taste and a thinner layer of microfoam, whereas a latte is served in a larger glass and is milkier.
