Apple and blackberry crumble

This easy apple and blackberry crumble recipe is utterly delicious with its tart, fruity flavours and extra-crispy topping.

Made with seasonal apples and blackberries, this comforting family pudding encompasses the flavours of autumn and makes for the perfect after-dinner treat. Serve with pouring cream or lashings of warm custard.

What you'll need...

For the fruit filling

  • 300g Bramley apples, cored and cut into chunks
  • 120g blackberries
  • 30g demerara sugar
  • 30g unsalted butter
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

For the crumble topping

  • 120g plain flour
  • 60g caster sugar
  • 60g unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon, optional

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 190C / 170C fan / gas 5.

  2. Pour the plain flour and caster sugar into a mixing bowl – if you’re using cinnamon, then add too. Add the room temperature butter and rub the mixture together using your fingertips until you create a breadcrumb texture. Avoid overworking the crumble.

  3. Sprinkle the crumble evenly over a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 mins or until it becomes lightly coloured.

  1. Time to make the fruit filling. Add the unsalted butter and demerara sugar into a saucepan and melt over a medium heat. Cook for 3-4 mins until the mixture turns into a caramel-like texture.

  2. Stir in the peeled, cored and chopped apples chunks into the caramel mixture and cook for a few minutes. Pour in the blackberries and add the cinnamon and cook for a further 4 mins.

  3. Remove from the heat and spoon the warm fruit into an ovenproof dish and top with the crumble. Place in the oven for 10 mins or until the fruit filling is bubbling and the top is a golden brown. Serve with custard, cream or vanilla ice cream.
