Bread sauce

Traditional bread sauce is a must-have for roast dinners, especially on Christmas Day.

Its thick and creamy texture pairs beautifully with chicken or turkey, making it a must-have for Christmas lunch. Our bread sauce recipe is simple and easy but utterly indulgent, adding depth and flavour to any roast dinner.

What you'll need...

  • 100g white breadcrumbs
  • 600ml full fat milk
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 50g butter
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 5 cloves
  • 6 peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 thyme sprigs
  • 4 tbsp single cream
  • Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg

Method

  1. Add the butter, milk, onion, cloves, garlic, peppercorns and herbs to a pan and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and return the liquid to the pan. 

  2. Pour in the breadcrumbs and simmer for a further 4 minutes. Stir in the single cream and nutmeg. 

  3. Season with salt and pepper and serve. If you’re making this in advance, then pour the mixture into an airtight container and leave in the fridge for up to 3 days. Heat the bread sauce on the hob or microwave for 3 minutes.
