Homemade white bread

Crusty on the outside, soft in the inside. Our white bread recipe can be made in a bread maker or baked traditionally in an oven.

There’s nothing quite like a home-baked loaf with its soft, light inside and crisp crust. Perfect for toast with spread and fruity jam, lunchtime sandwiches or dipped into a hearty bowl of soup.

We recommend using this recipe for the ‘Basic’ program on our Bread Maker, which includes kneading, rising and baking. This white bread recipe makes a 900g loaf.

What you'll need...

  • 320ml water
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 490g strong white bread flour
  • 1 tsp quick yeast

Method

  1. Add the ingredients in the following order: water, oil, salt, sugar, flour then yeast last. Make sure the yeast doesn’t touch the salt. 

  2. Turn on the bread maker and select the ‘Basic’ program. Select the ‘Loaf size’ (900g) and ‘Loaf colour’ for the crust. 

  3. Make sure that the bread pan is locked into place then start the machine. 

  1. Once finished, carefully remove the bread pan and use a non-stick spatula to loosen the sides.  

  2. Gently tip the bread out of the pan onto a wire rack and remove the kneading blade from the bottom of the loaf. 

  3. Leave the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
